Course Information

The Diploma is taught over six three-day blocks held every two months (120 teaching hours).

COURSE AIMS

The Diploma in Supervision will enable students to:

  • Develop a theoretical understanding of professional supervision and apply this to the professional context in which
    they work
  • Practice and develop their supervisory skills under the guidance and support of the tutor team
  • Develop an understanding of the centrality of the relationship in Supervision and how to develop an effective
    Supervisory relationship
  • Explore the ethical, professional and legal issues in Supervisory practice
  • Develop an awareness of the theory of group dynamics and apply this to group Supervision
  • Explore creative supervision
  • Identify ways in which issues of race, gender, sexual orientation and disability affect professional practice and Supervision

LEARNING OUTCOMES

On completion of the course students will be able to:

  • Form an effective supervisory relationship with both individuals and groups
  • Apply their theoretical knowledge and understanding of professional supervision to their practice as supervisors
  • Consider ethical, professional and legal issues within supervision
  • Provide supervision in various contexts
  • Supervise allied professionals

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

Outside of course attendance, students are required to implement their learning into practice by offering a minimum of 15 hours supervision within their own, or an allied, profession and access their own regular supervision with a qualified supervisor. Students also commit to reading and reflection between taught modules, ensuring they have time and space to complete and submit assignments with evident consideration and professionalism.

Students are awarded a Diploma in Supervision upon successful completion and passing of the following assessment criteria:

  • Contract Essay (1,500 words)
  • Philosophy of Supervision Essay (2,000-3,000 words)
  • Presentation
  • Case Study, including a 10-minute transcript and process analysis (3,000- 3,500 words)
  • Learning Portfolio

The experiential and practice based nature of the course allows tutors, peers and external moderators to assess and evaluate that successful students, not only satisfy the academic criteria, they also possess the professional and personal moral qualities to develop an effective, professional, supervisory relationship.

Students awarded a Diploma will have demonstrated professional competency and understanding of developmental and interpersonal theory.

FUTURE COURSES 

For the Diploma to be fully accessible, and for students to get the most from the training, they are required to share a language so they can communicate directly with each other.  The dates for the next two courses are as follows:
Currently running  Open to sign and spoken language interpreters and allied communication professionals: shared language English.  

 

The next course will be open to Deaf professionals and Sign Language Interpreters: shared language BSL.

The course fee for the next intake will be available when the course is advertised includes:

  • comprehensive course handbook
  • all training materials
  • internal and external teaching, marking and moderation fees
  • day delegate rate including hire of training rooms
  • morning and afternoon refreshments
  • Saturday and Sunday lunch
